Overview:

This case study explores the redesign of a habit tracker app aimed at improving user engagement and retention. The app initially struggled with common user pain points, such as loss of motivation and confusion about effective habit formation. Through targeted research and user feedback, we identified key challenges and implemented a series of design improvements. The new app design focuses on goal-setting, progress tracking, flexibility, and personalized habit suggestions to create a more engaging and sustainable habit-forming experience for users.

Problem:

Users often lose motivation shortly after downloading habit tracker apps due to overwhelming task lists and a lack of understanding about effective habit formation. Our app previously encountered this common issue, leading to a decline in user engagement and app retention.

Lack of Motivation as a Major Barrier:

68% of users reported a lack of motivation as the primary reason for discontinuing habit tracking.

What the Numbers Say

Understanding user perspectives

To understand the challenges faced by users, I conducted extensive research, including user interviews, benchmarking, and forum analysis. The following pain points and insights were derived from my research:

- 45% of users indicated that repetitive tasks led to boredom and disengagement.

- 60% of users were unsure about how to form effective habits.

- 55% of users felt they lacked insight into their progress, resulting in a loss of motivation.

- 40% of users did not realize that habits could be flexible, leading to frustration when routines were disrupted.

- 63% of users set up too many habits at once, leading to a decrease in motivation when unable to complete them.

"I didn’t realize that missing a day doesn’t mean I’ve failed. I need more flexibility to stay on track."
"It’s frustrating not knowing if I'm improving or not. I need more feedback and progress updates."
"I feel overwhelmed when I try to track too many habits at once. I end up not doing any of them."
"I get bored doing the same thing every day, and then I just stop using the app altogether."

To better align with user needs, I crafted these personas as a foundation for my strategic decisions.

How might our app help people consistently form and maintain new habits, even when their daily routines are unpredictable and motivation fluctuates?

Boost User Engagement with Customizable Avatars During Onboarding
Creating your own avatar during the onboarding phase and editing it later can increase the person's rate of ownership of the application and therefore the habits they will gain with the application by providing personalization.
Gamification Elements:
Introduce a streak feature* that visually tracks how many consecutive days a user has completed a habit. Include small rewards, like badges **or unlockable content, to keep users motivated by celebrating their consistency and progress.

Motivation and Dopamine Boost
Users' motivation can be increased with short videos and articles by creating a space for them to learn about habit formation, and even start with a video suggestion when they first enter the application during the day.

Add a progress bar to the home page to show how the daily targets are and add it to the phone as a widget.
